This Is Not A VR Game (2017)

This Is Not A VR Game is a VR game with no visuals, designed to be played in front of an audience. Players put the VR headset and audio headphones on, and the experience begins. The screen is black as there is nothing to see (i.e. the VR headset is not even plugged in), and instead the player hears the game creator’s voice. The creator makes an agreement with the player and together they act and fool the audience, convincing them that the player is actually playing a VR game. The creator instructs and the player performs. “Act like a bird, pretend to swim, drive a car, use a bow and arrow, pick up the rock from the ground, throw punches with your fists” are just some of the actions the player is asked to enact. A motion controller is also used in the game (the motion controller does not need to be plugged in either, but the player will be asked to physically throw it during the experience). It is suggested that the game is played a second time by a new player, but on loud speakers instead of headphones. Two chairs are required to play the game.

This Is Not A VR Game was made during TIGJAM 4 AU, in Melbourne, Australia. The game was exhibited during the Choir of the Impossible exhibition in late October, 2017.
